The federal state Ceará is in the northeast of Brazil and adjoins in the south to Pernambuco, in the east to Paraiba and Rio Grande do Norte and in the north to the Atlantic Ocean. The total area is about 146.000 km². In the year 2001 it´s count about 7.430.000 citizen with a density of population by 50,77 citizen per km². The federal state subdivides into 184 communities. The biggest cities are: Fortaleza, Caucaia, Juazeiro do Norte, Maracanau, Sobral, Crato, Itapipoca, Maranguape, Iguatu, Quixada, Caninde, Crateus, Aquiraz, Morada Nova, Aracati, Tiangua, Ico, Russas and Cascavel. The capital is Fortaleza. Here you can find the most of the tourists. The Praia de Meireles at the Avenida Beira Mar provide the most of hotels and restaurants. At the beach of Forteleza is always a lot going on. One of the interesting buildings Fortalezas is the Teatro Alencar, which is namend by the popular writer José de Alencar. The building is a construction of iron components which is rich decorated with galleries and motifs of Jugendstil.
Tourists from all over the world visit Ceará. But also the brasilian tourists like to come here. One of the reason are the most beautiful beaches of Brazil. White dune beaches and warm sea water let the brief 560 km long coast Cearás become to the most visted beaches. A sunset at the beach of Iracema is a great attraction you should have seen.
The Vale Monumental do Ceará contains the territories Quixada and Quixeramobim. By erosion originated many rocks, the monoliths, who are witnesses of a geological past and distingguished by primitive inscriptions. In the cities you can see historical buildings. Caverns, canyons and lakes invites you to walk. Acude do Cedro was pronounced to historical monument. Park Canário Monumental, the ecological land reservation Raquel de Querioz and the privat reservation by natural inheritance of Fazenda Näo Me Deixes counts as preserve places in Vale Monumental de Ceará.
Noumerous waterfalls and rock walls and also paths invites to Serra do Baturité. An additional particularity are the mountains Baturité and the ecological park of Guaramiranga.
Every year occurs pilgrimages to Juazeiro do Norte, which joins about a million believer. Holy sites and different monuments and buildings were build in honor of Pater Cicero, whose adored for his political and religious songs since end of last century. Antique sugar mills and manors can be watched in Cariri. But it also affords a lot of things for friends of museums, churches and monuments. The nature reserves of the region are the Nationalparc Arraripe- Apodi and the plateau Araripe.
In the Nationalparc Ubajara in the region Ibipaba you can bath in the waterfalls. You can also walk on one of the many woodpaths. Additional you can run a chance to watch the caverns. A highlight is the Grot Ubajara with the stones „Pedra do Sino“, „Sala do Oratório“ and „Sete Maravilhas“.
Ideal adapted for swimming and diving are the lakes and the natural formed pools in the western coastal area of Ceará.
At the east coastal area you can relax under coco palms. Also interesting for tourists are the river islands of Jaguaribe and the colonial buildings. They make the region to something special.
